Marin General Celebrates Screwing up Less Often

Front page of todayorwell-drifting from the truth‘s Marin Independent Journal is Marin General Hospital celebrating better testing for breast cancer screening that promises to “yield fewer false positives, reducing the anxiety of repeat exams.” What does this mean?

How Accurate is Mammography?

First, it is necessary to understand that mammography, tesing for breast cancer, is highly inaccurate. There are many false positives… women being told that they have cancer when they don’t… causing extreme anxiety. There are also false negatives… women being told that they do not have breast cancer, when they do! So, they screw up often. Now, Marin General is celebrating that they will be screwing up less. Think about that!

Reconsidering Mammography

You might also think about the very real possibility that mammography may cause breast cancer, because of repeated exposure of soft, low energy X-rays. These, because they are low energy, bounce around in the body before they leave serious biological effect.

People are trained to celebrate every medical advance, breakthrough, etc., even a better, less screwed-up testing machine such as this.

Face it! Medicine, which consumes one sixth of our economy, is making us sicker, and poorer.
