A Biochemical Imbalance?
No. This “biochemical imbalance” thing is just fake science, made up to sell drugs. Can it be a problem, for your child and for the family? Yes, but it is more a behavioral problem than something constitutionally wrong with your child’s brain, as you’ve been led to believe.
The classic signs that parents and teachers notice:
- Inattention, hyperactivity and being easily distracted
- Difficulty concentrating and sitting still
- Inability to control impulsive thoughts and behaviors
- Easily distracted by noises and activities
- Always moving—fingers, hands, arms, feet or legs
Being that most children labeled with ADHD happen to be boys, could it be that this phenomenon is a modern societal prejudice against boys being boys? (Sorry. I am decidedly not “politically correct.”) Could it be that your child is just plain bored in school? Maybe the material is really poor, or the way in which it is presented is not engaging. Perhaps your child is far advanced, academically. That was the case with my son, Abraham. He was so far ahead of the material, and so, so bored, that he was sometimes falling asleep in class, sometimes doing some (pretty good) pranks. He dropped out of the sixth grade, went to College of Marin (at age 11), transferred to Cal Tech in Pasadena, and got his Ph.D. in theoretical physics from Penn State when he was only 22. Would you call that a disease? What if he had been drugged by some pediatrician? Einstein didn’t talk until he was five. What if he was put on Ritalin?
What you can do?
Begin by making nutritional and lifestyle changes. Rule out environmental factors by reducing your child’s exposure to substances that are increasingly common these days:
- Remove food dyes, preservatives and additives from the diet.
- Focus on natural, organic foods grown without pesticides or herbicides.
- Eliminate all sugars and artificial sweeteners.
- Reduce the use of pesticides, bleach, scented detergents, fabric softeners and other harmful chemicals.
- Limit the time your child is hooked into electronics, especially computer games.
- Introduce your child to the wonder of books.
These are wise choices whether your child has the symptoms associated with ADHD or not!
The typical case is a teacher “playing doctor,” diagnosing a child with ADHD, getting the parent to take the “troublesome” child to the pediatrician to confirm the diagnosis and prescribe the drugs. When a parent resists, school officials sometimes get involved. Others may take part in coercing dangerous medical treatment. Big Brother in a White Coat. Note that there is no lab test, nor any imaging modality, to detect ADHD.
A popular approach to controlling symptoms of ADHD is to administer regular doses of methylphenidate. More commonly known as Ritalin®. Other popular ADHD drugs include Adderall and Concerta. None of these drugs are safe for your child. Recent studies have shown no permanent improvement in schoolwork.
Ritalin® is a schedule II controlled substance related to, and producing similar effects as, amphetamines and cocaine. The side effects, including personality changes and permanent changes to the brain, cause many parents to look for alternatives. There have even been cases of heart attacks in children, caused by Ritalin.
None of these drug therapies do anything to normalize the nervous system. Each one is dangerous, in both the short term, and the very long term. Does anyone really know all the effects of these dangerous drugs upon a developing brain?
Chiropractic: Pure and Natural
Instead of treating the various symptoms of hyperactivity, which may or may not even be a disease, putting your child’s present and future health at risk, in Chiropractic we look for interference to your child’s nervous system, Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC).
If Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC) is found anywhere in your child’s spine, that can effect his or her metabolism, which can effect the brain, and it could effect the brain directly. A child free of nerve interference will generally behave better, and do better in school. Every child should be checked for VSC.
Side effects? Instead of the horrible side effects of Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, etc., the side effects of chiropractic care for your child will be that he or she will grow up healthier, better able to express his or her genetic potential.
